Google Desktop Searchのヘルプの不具合

実は，すこし前まで手元のGoogle Desktop Searchでメールの検索ができていなかった．インデックスステータスを見ると，「電子メール」は，1となっており，明らかにメインで使っているThunderbirdのメールが認識されていない．ヘルプを見てみたが，該当するような項目はなかった．個別のメーラに関する話はOutlookのみなので，Thunderbirdでは参考になりそうにない．

しかたがないので，英語版のDesktop Search Forum(該当するものは日本語版にはない)を検索すると以下のような興味深い発言があった．

おぉ，これこそ求めていた答えでは!と思い，勇躍してクリックするも「Document Not Found」．ガックリ．

Google Desktop Searchのヘルプは，日本語のブラウザで見ると，強制的に日本語ページに飛ばされる(おそらくAccept-Languageあたりで判別しているのだろう)．英語版を見る手段はない．したがって，日本語に訳されていない項目のペルプは，日本語のブラウザでは，どうしたって見れないんである．しかたがないので，unix boxのw3mで見ると見れた．手元のFirefoxでは，どうしたって見れないので以下に引用しておく．

I just installed Mozilla, Firefox, or Thunderbird.

If you install Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla, and/or Thunderbird after you install Google Desktop Search, Desktop Search may not be able to find your web history or email. Here's how to fix the problem:

1. Open the C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search directory.
2. Find the three GoogleDesktopMozilla files in this directory.
3. Copy these files to the following directory:

4. Close Firefox, Mozilla, and/or Thunderbird.
5. Delete the compreg.dat file located in the following directory:

6. Reopen Firefox, Mozilla, and/or Thunderbird.

Once you've done this, Desktop Search should begin indexing your web history and email. We realize this process may be inconvenient and may offer an improvement in the future.

NOTE: if you don't have some of the above directories, you may need to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox, Mozilla, or Thunderbird for best performance with Desktop Search.

私の場合は，5の「プロファイル内のcompreg.datを消せ」という手順によって，目出たくThunderbirdのメールもインデックスが作成されるようになった．

ともあれ，訳を作る気がないんだったら，素直に英語版のヘルプを見る手段もちゃんと用意しておいてほしいものだ．
